Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München: Junior Professorship of Global Church Leadership/ Canon Law

The Faculty of Catholic Theology invites applications for a
Junior Professorship (W1) (3 years/tenure track leading to W2)
of Global Church Leadership/ Canon Law
commencing as soon as possible. 

The primary tasks of the successful candidate include the scientific representation of the area of Global Church Leadership on various academic levels of research and teaching. Within the above-mentioned research focus the variety of forms of action and strategies of church leaders in non-European countries (primarily the Catholic church) are to be examined. By analyzing the contextual conditions of church ministry and in developing a criteriology for operational strategies as well as for the required steps concerning their implementation based on scientific assessments, a significant contribution is expected to be made for a better understanding of church leadership in the context of a global society. 

The successful candidate will participate in the full variety of degree programs offered by the Faculty of Catholic Theology and by the Klaus-Mörsdorf-Institute of Canon Law in particular. The standard course program will be enriched by course offerings on the different aspects of church leadership. Joint teaching projects with other theological disciplines and offered to students from various programs of the University will also form a possible part of the course load. 

Prerequisites for this position are a university degree in Catholic Theology or Canon Law, teaching skills at university level and an aptitude for an academic career, usually evidenced by the excellent quality of a doctoral degree. If the applicant was employed as a research assistant either before or after obtaining the doctoral degree, the entire duration of the period of employment and of the doctoral degree should not exceed six years. 

The position is a fixed-term professorship for the duration of three years. Pending a positive evaluation, the position may be extended by another period of three years. After a minimum of three years, pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s aptitude for teaching and research as well as the candidate’s pedagogical and personal aptitude, the appointment may be converted to an indefinite W2-professorship (tenure). If the applicant was already a member of LMU Munich at the time of the appointment to a junior professorship, such a tenure option may only be exercised in exceptional cases. 

This professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States. Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.
