Postgraduate Research Studentship in Peace Studies/Conflict Resolution.

Applications are invited for a Postgraduate Research Studentship in the field of Peace Studies/Conflict Resolution. The studentship is available to full-time UK/EU students only, and the award will be for £10,000 per year, for three years, and is to cover fees and maintenance. The 3 year award will be subject to satisfactory progress and may be withdrawn at any time if progress is not considered to be satisfactory.

The successful applicant will be expected to carry out up to four hours of teaching assistance per week on peace and conflict studies courses within the Richardson Institute as well as doing a small amount of research assistant work for the Institute (1 hour per week). Recipients will be expected to submit a funding application to the Economic and Social Research Council and/or Arts and Humanities Research Council during their first year of study. This award is accessible to those due to commence their studies in 2006-07 only. Students already studying on postgraduate research programmes in the Faculty are not eligible for the award.

Applications are welcome from students wishing to undertake PhD research linked to the research expertise of the staff of the Richardson Institute, one of whom will provide PhD supervision.

Relevant thematic areas for this bursary would include one of the following:

– The Role/Impact of Diaspora/migration in peace processes and deeply divided societies;
– Elite Behaviour in Ethnic Conflicts, especially in post-communist states;
– Theories of Ethnicity and Ethno-national conflict in deeply divided societies;
– Nationalism, Religious Radicalism and Civil Wars;
– Ethnic Conflicts, particularly in former Yugoslavia/Caucasus;
– Comparative Peace Processes/Post-Conflict Peace Building.

Applications for this bursary should be made through the Department of Politics and International Relations in the normal manner. Particular attention should be given to submitting your research proposal, which should clearly set out your research project, locating it within the relevant literature and outlining the methodology that will be used to achieve the research objectives.
